The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1990. ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in all areas of public life, including work, school, transportation and all public and private places open to the public. The purpose of the act is to ensure that persons with disabilities enjoy the same rights and opportunities as others. The law on persons with disabilities provides persons with disabilities with similar civil rights protection as individuals based on race, colour, sex, nationality, age and religion. It guarantees equal opportunities for persons with disabilities in public accommodation, employment, transportation, state and local government services and telecommunications. ADA is divided into five headings (or chapters) covering different areas of public life.
